MOLLIE MAKES
FORMER DEPUTY ART EDITOR & REGULAR ILLUSTRATION CONTRIBUTOR
Becki has a highly regarded, long-standing relationship with Mollie Makes, contributing across a wide range of creative roles over many years, including as Deputy Art Editor and a regular contributor. Mollie Makes is aimed at a new generation of crafters, celebrating creativity through a blend of distinctive editorial content, thoughtful design, and ongoing creative inspiration. As a reader of the magazine herself, Becki’s contemporary creative practice naturally aligns with its audience.
Becki was commissioned to design a full-page editorial illustration and accompanying hand lettering for a feature focused on the transition to a freelance career. As a publication that encourages its readers to turn creativity into a profession, it was important that her illustration reflected the article’s informative yet uplifting tone.
Working within a limited colour palette, Becki created a playful, bright, and engaging illustration that captures the positivity and optimism at the heart of the feature.
Mollie Makes regularly features pull-out papers that are much loved by its loyal readers and makers. Becki was commissioned to create a set of illustrated papers for the Mollie Makes Christmas issue, responding to a brief that called for a traditional yet playful approach. She developed sheets of watercolour-painted illustrations alongside hand-lettered gift tags, ensuring the designs carried a seasonal feel without being overtly Christmas-themed. This allowed the artwork to feel versatile and timeless, suitable for a wide range of craft applications and appealing to all readers. The pull-out sheets were also featured within a wrapping project in the magazine, further showcasing their creative potential and usability.
Commissioned to illustrate a summer range of pull-out papers for Mollie Makes, Becki created a series of patterns and prints inspired by wild florals and the vibrant energy of summer.
Painted in gouache, the bright, playful floral designs feature Becki’s signature hand lettering and were designed to be versatile—allowing readers to pull them out and frame as standalone artwork. Alongside these, the botanical patterns were created to lend themselves naturally to a wide range of contemporary craft projects, supporting Mollie Makes’ community of modern makers.
Becki was commissioned to illustrate a set of seasonal paper designs for Mollie Makes Issue 142. Drawing inspiration from her Spring/Summer nature journal, she created eight designs that responded to a brief centred on bright, bold, and cheerful floral motifs. The colour palettes were carefully considered to reflect the energy of the season, celebrating the joyful abundance of colour found in nature during the warmer months. Each design was hand-painted in gouache, embracing a vibrant and expressive style. The final papers were printed in the magazine for readers to pull out, frame, or use in a variety of creative craft projects.
