Paint Your Own Advent Candle

Hand painted advent candle using paint pens.

The hand painted candle trend is going no where and it’s not hard to see why! They are the perfect conversational touch to a mantlepiece and a simple way to express your creativity. For a festive twist, hand painted advent candles are a wonderful way to countdown to Christmas and welcome in the season of merry, plus they make delightful gifts.

I use Posca paint pens for my hand painted candles which work really well, with great colour vibrancy and are much easier than using a brush to create small designs, plus they are safe to burn. White paint on coloured candles can look really effective but for a traditional take, try coloured yule-inspired motifs such as stars and foliage on ivory tapered candles.

What you will need to paint candles; Posca paint pens and tall flat sided candles.

Handpainted Advent Candle: How To

Have a quick practice of the motifs you want to use on your candles before committing them to candle. Try mixing between motif sizes to create a pattern with movement and flow

Measure out the candle length and draw on your half way point - number 12. This will make it easier you to work from when adding the other numbers to your advent candle.

Make sure your numbers are dry before working decorative Christmas elements around them.

Foliage can be illustrated by drawing a curved line and adding teardrop shapes along the line working up the stem.

Work around the entire advent candle adding detail from every side.

Let your paint dry fully before lighting.

Once you’re confident with the paint pens on candles you can also create some unique and beautiful hand painted candles for your Christmas table! They look wonderful alongside festive brush lettered place names and menus.
