Seasonal Musings from the Studio - July

After a beautiful Solstice spent at Stonehenge last month, and a few days away exploring Rhodes, I’m back home and ready to embrace the month of July. This month in the studio, I’m mainly working on Christmas crafts, I’m really excited about these commissions & it will be lovely to share them with you later in the year, So I’m really enjoying retreating to my garden in the evenings, where the cosmos have exploded, the roses have had a second wind and the hydrangea is blooming, helping me come back into the rhythm and magic of July after days spent singing holly jolly with baubles in hand.

Creative ways to celebrate the month of July…

  • Embrace edible flowers & bake floral biscuits. Use a simple biscuit recipe, what I’ve found is best is to take your biscuits out of the oven around 1-2 minutes earlier than the recipe says, press your flower into the dough and pop back in the oven for a minute or two to set your floral in place without burning them. You might even have some flowers in your garden you could use, rose petals, geraniums and marigolds are all in season and perfect for edible cooking.

  • Use up fabric scraps and make your own seed bombs, they are the perfect favour idea for a nature-themed wedding/celebration or would make gorgeous gifts for friends with Summer birthdays! I’ve also shared a few more nature-inspired celebratory ideas with Hobbycraft this month.

  • I was chatting on Instagram this week about the simplicity of nature journaling… A nice technique to explore is working with one colour for a week, you can use just one coloured pencil or explore all of the mediums that you have in that tone to journal your findings from the week in your sketchbook.

  • It’s Hollyhocks season! Absolutely love getting out early in the morning (the earlier, the better in this heat) and spotting these beauties along the garden edges and road sides. Enjoy a Hollyhocks hunt on your next walk.

  • Write a Summer Joy List! Download the list template, print it out and enjoy an afternoon filling in with ideas for the summer days ahead. Add ideas that make you feel happy or excited, big or small…whatever might bring you joy over the summer!
