Brush Lettering Essentials

I’ve had such a wonderful few weeks teaching 24 online Brush Lettering workshops with Hobbycraft and so many messages asking about what materials to use & other pens to try that I thought I’d share a few of my Brush Lettering kit essentials…

The great thing about Brush Lettering is that unlike lots of other crafts you do only need 2 materials, your pen and paper so making sure you get the right ones is really important.

Which Brush Lettering Pen to use?

I have a few favourites to share with you that I have recommended in my book and also use to teach workshops. Firstly the Pentel GFKP Brush pen is my favourite Black ink brush pen, it has a flexible and almost paint brush style tip that responds and works brilliantly with changing pressures and stroke thicknesses. The pen takes ink refills and is a must for any beginner Brush Lettering artists Kit. I often use this for wedding place names like below and lots of stationery projects.

Next up are the Papermania Metallic Brush Pens, I recommended them in my book Modern Brush Lettering and have also been teaching using these for my recent workshops. The pack is really great value with a gorgeous selection of metallic colours that work well on not only paper but ceramics, wood, chalkboards and glass so if you want to combine your Brush Lettering with crafts these are an essential!

And finally for bright coloured pens I love using the Tombow Dual Brush Pens, I have the pastel and bright packs and the colour pigment on both is amazing. The only downside is the nibs are quite firm so I’d always suggest doing some mark making with the pens first to get you used to using the nib and happy with the flow before working on your Brush Lettering project!

What paper works best for Brush Lettering?

You’ll need a nice smooth finish paper, anything textured could cause your nib to get stuck or spray out. My favourite paper pads for practicing my lettering are Winsor & Newton Bleedproof Marker Paper and for a slightly cheaper option that works just as well the Hobbycraft Jumbo Drawing pad which is also 150 sheets so plenty of space to practice!

It’s really fun exploring new materials and finding the pen that works best for you and your Brush Lettering so I hope this helps if you are looking to add to your own Brush Lettering kit!
