Sustainable Christmas Crafts - Natural Decorations

Natural and sustainable Christmas decorations using foraged materials

This Christmas, one of the best gifts we can give each other is being mindful of our impact on the environment. While so many of the decorations we can buy are moving away from being throwaway pieces, there’s still something lovely about crafting decorations which are completely natural and sustainable while looking lovely and festive too. Today I’m encouraging you to head out for a winter walk and collect a few pieces of nature to go alongside the traditional Christmas must-haves, dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks, to create simple natural decorations. These are perfect for a last-minute addition to your Christmas tree, to hang from twigs or cupboard handles or even to string together and make a garland. They’re incredibly easy and really don’t take very long, but if you’re anything like me you’ll take some time crafting these while warming up beside the fire after a walk. And once you’ve got the Christmas crafting bug you might want to try your hand at some of my other festive makes, featured over on Hobbycraft or my Instagram.

Sustainable Natural Christmas Decorations | How To

Gather your materials together. You can use anything foraged and collected from outside to create fun natural hangings  as well as traditionally festive dried fruit and cinnamon sticks.

Create star decorations using twigs by cutting them all down to similar sizes and using a hot glue gun to secure them in place - make sure to hold in place for a minute while the glue is drying.

You can also create snowflakes using the same technique but with smaller twigs attached to the top of the longer lengths. Again, use the glue gun to secure and hold in place until dry. Once you are happy with the shape add a loop of twine which you will use for hanging your decorations.

Orange slices, cinnamon sticks, small gathers of berries or foliage all make lovely natural decorations, too. Simply thread a length of twine through and secure to make your hanging decorations.
