Sustainable Christmas Garland

Sustainable Christmas Garland Craft by Becki Clark

This Christmas I’m making every effort I can to be more sustainable and with so much potential for waste over the festive period, my thoughts turned to crafting homespun Christmas decorations from things otherwise destined for the bin. The perfect craft for beginners, this Scandi-style sustainable Christmas garland DIY I created for Hobbycraft is a quick make reusing throwaway cardboard which can be decorated in your own unique style. It fits perfectly with the Nordic focus on crafting, reusing and foraging and I’ll be making more in the run-up to Christmas with left over packaging and my Posca pens

Sustainable Christmas Garland: What You’ll Need

  • Thin cardboard; recycling things like cereal boxes, packaging and hardback envelopes works well.

  • Circle punch

  • Posca pen

  • Glue stick

  • Thin twine

Sustainable Christmas Garland: Step by Step

Gather your cardboard from your recycling. You are looking for thin cardboard which will fit in your circle punch.

Using your punch make your circles. You will be gluing these back to back, so cut double the amount you want for your garland.

Once you have a full set of cardboard circles, begin drawing on these with your Posca pen. For a Scandi-inspired garland create spots, stripes, gingham and stars with a white pen.

While the paint dries, cut your twine to your desired garland length, allowing for some swag.

Begin glueing your circles back to back with the twine running between each pair of circles. Keep equal distance between the circles for a balance garland style.

Let the garland dry fully before hanging from a fireplace, windows or along walls.

Top Tip

You can, of course, manually cut the circles, but the great thing about the circle punch is it will give you precise shapes so you’ll have no overlap when glueing the circle back to back.
