A mindful craft project

Mindful Embroidery

Embrace the cosy evenings and craft your own mini abstract embroidery this Autumn. You don’t need to be a stitcher to enjoy this project, its ideal for beginners or anyone looking for a moment of mindfulness as it uses just one simple stitch and technique. So grab a cuppa, head to the sofa and sit down for an evening embracing the relaxing craft of abstract embroidery. There’s no right or wrong, this craft project is all about using colours that bring you joy, exploring shapes and creating something beautiful for your shelf.

Craft Materials

Embroidery thread in a few colours, I choose a palette of soft pink, cream, rust, dusky blue and green to embrace and celebrate Autumn but it’s totally up to you, you might have a few threads in your craft stash you fancy using.

Fabric (tight woven like a linen)

Mini Hoop (I used a 4in hoop)

Needle

How to craft your abstract embroidery

Place your fabric into the hoop and secure by tightening the two hoops together. Take a colour and thread your needle before stitching into the fabric and creating your first shape with a straight stitch (simply achieved by pulling the needle up through the fabric and then threading back in to form the line). There is no right or wrong for the shape you create, enjoy the repetitiveness of stitching at varying lengths to form your shapes.

You can then use your first shape as an edge to begin your next colour, just using varying lengths of running stitch to keep it nice, simple and mindful as you stitch the different sized shapes outwards from your existing shapes. Add pattern by creating sections of small stitches that almost look like dashes around the stitched shapes you have created.

As you add different coloured shapes you will see your mini craft artwork take shape. You should feel confident in adding some more shapes randomly around the edges, mixing the sizes & colours.

Join sections together with longer running stitches, experimenting with how they look. If you’re unsure about a shape you can unpick it or work over it in another colour to craft more texture, this craft project is just about enjoying the process of creating and exploring colour, texture and shape.

Keep stitching until you are happy with your abstract embroidery & once finished trim the excess fabric from round the hoop. This is such a lovely simple craft project but one that brings much calmness and joy, do let me know if you get stitching, I’d love to see!
